John Twachtman – “Paradise Rocks, Newport”, ca. 1889

Ira Spanierman discusses one of his favorite painters, John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902), one of the group of American artists known as The Ten. Mr. Spanierman touches on Twachtman’s skillful use of negative space and subtle brushwork, which earned him a reputation as being a painter’s painter. Twachtman created an important group of works in the summer of 1889 on a visit to Newport, Rhode Island. One of these is the present painting,  Paradise Rocks, Newport, ca. 1889, which could be considered a pivotal work in his oeuvre as it both draws from the lessons of his French period and moves towards the personalized aesthetic he would refine in the years ahead.

The John Henry Twachtman catalogue raisonné, co-authored by Ira Spanierman and Lisa N. Peters, P.h.D., is currently in its final stages.

Gershon Benjamin – “Contemplation”, ca. 1929

Ira Spanierman discusses recently rediscovered artist Gershon Benjamin (1899-1985).  In Contemplation, ca. 1929, Benjamin juxtaposes a small figure with a vast sea and rocky outcropping, giving an emotional quality to the abstract canvas. Benjamin, a close friend of the modernist painter Milton Avery, (1885-1965), probably painted Contemplation in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where both he and Avery were known to have painted in the summer.

Spanierman Gallery, LLC represents the estate of Gershon Benjamin. The 2008 retrospective exhibition, Over Seven Decades: The Art of Gershon Benjamin, at Spanierman Gallery, LLC was accompanied by a 144-page catalogue which features 130 color illustrations.

Video: Peter Poskas on “Prelude to Spring, New Milford, Connecticut”

Jenn McMenemy
A few weeks ago we invited artist Peter Poskas in for a brief video interview with Ira. As part of the “video team” it was a pleasure meeting Peter and his wife, Jan, and a treat to hear him talk about one of his recent works, Prelude to Spring, New Milford, Connecticut
.  It was nice hearing of his experiences painting the farms of Connecticut, especially the story of the only refusal he’s gotten on a farm he wanted to paint.  View Peter Poskas art for sale on our website
